Tuesday, April 4, there was a special guest in town! The Food Network’s show, “Ginormous Food” was at El Palacio Mexican Restaurant and Cantina in Chandler to film at the Valley restaurant for almost the entire day. “Ginormous Food” is exactly what you’re probably thinking – Giant portions of food or extra-large versions that will make your mouth water and your eyes pop! The show’s host, Josh Denny travels the country showcasing the biggest and craziest culinary concoctions and he certainly found one at El Palacio.
The food item at the center of the “Ginormous Food” world during the show taping was the entrée known as the “El Bandito Burrito.” El Bandito is not for the faint of heart. The huge burrito weighs a whopping five pounds and is two feet long. What’s inside: carne asada, pollo asado, avocado, onion, tomato, tamale, chile relleno, Mexican Rice, house made beans, cheese, lettuce, guacamole and signature cilantro and onion crema. Half of the burrito is covered in red enchilada sauce and the other half in green verde sauce. It’s safe to say this is one entrée you can share with your table.
During the taping, Denny and El Palacio’s Chef Anthony Serrano set up a fun shoot in the kitchen while the El Bandito was being created. He also made menudo and tamales. Later in the afternoon as guests started to fill the restaurant for dinner, different filming scenarios were created featuring some of the outstanding menu items at El Palacio. Scottsdale.com got in on the action, shooting a segment with Valley comedienne, Jill Kimmel talking about the delicious El Palacio sangria with show host, Denny.
