Notre Dame Prep Actress Wins HSMT Award for Best Vocalist
Notre Dame Preparatory sophomore Anna Sera, earned the Best High School Vocalist Award at the ASU Gammage High School Musical Theater Awards, Saturday, May 21, for her role as Sandra Bloom in Notre Dame Preparatory’s premiere production of Big Fish.
The announcement was made before more than 1,000 cheering high school drama performers, directors, friends and families. "It was so loud and so exciting," says Sera. "Looking out at all those people was amazing."
Sera, was one of 48 other high school vocalists nominated for the award. "My mom has us do affirmations all the time, so I just kept repeating in my head, I'm a winner," she says about standing next to the other nominees awaiting the announcement.
When they called her name, Sera says that she wasn't even sure she heard it correctly. "And then it sank in and I was like, oh, my gosh, it's me!" she adds.
Sera, who is on the NDP Principal’s List with more than a 4.0 GPA, has worked very hard to hone her craft and develop her voice. She has been singing since she was four years old and started private voice lessons at age 10.
She has performed in Carnegie Hall twice, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2011 and in many local musical productions. Her next show will be Pippin, produced by Temple Music Studios in June.
This is the first year Sera was nominated for HSMT Best Vocalist, and the second straight year being nominated for Best Leading Actress. Last year, she was up for the award for her role as Wednesday Addams in the Addams Family at NDP.
Sera would like to thank Notre Dame Prep drama instructor Bonnie Wilson for giving her the role of Sandra Bloom, NDP choral instructor Anna Frisch for helping with the songs and many others. "I'd like to thank my mom, dad and sister Izzy for putting up with me singing all the time," she explains.
Notre Dame Preparatory is planning the construction of a new performing arts center on campus so that students like Sera, “Can have a fitting place to perform,” says NDP principal Jim Gmelich.
Giving back to the community through various service projects, earned Sera the 2014 Christian Service Award through Catholic Community Foundation, where she continues to be an active member of their Young Ambassadors Association.
“Working with the children at the Miracle League of Arizona is without a doubt my favorite Christian service activity,” Sera explains. “You get to play baseball with children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to play this type of sport.”
